These microscopic parasites live in the ear canal and feed on ear debris and skin, causing intense irritation. Common signs include: • Constant scratching at the ears • Head shaking • Dark, coffee-ground–like debris in the ears • Redness, odor, or sensitivity when touched Ear mites are highly contagious between pets and can spread through close contact, shared bedding, or grooming. Luckily, they’re very treatable with prescription ear medications and topical preventatives. If you notice persistent itching or discharge, don’t ignore it—ear infections and secondary skin issues can develop quickly. A simple ear exam and cytology can confirm mites and guide treatment.
